You Can’t Always Get What You Want
The classic Rolling Stones tune – You Can’t Always Get What You Want — is about longing – for love, for drugs, for something. It may well be about anything we think we want in life.
What do you want in life? How will you get it?
Most people only think they know what they want. It’s only when they have to struggle – really struggle – that they find the truth. If you really want something, you’ll pay any price to get it.
We’ve all met people who say they aspire to achieve greatness – the high school sports star, the music student, the budding entrepreneur. How many of them actually achieve their stated goals? Not many, in my experience.
Talent is a limiting factor in some fields. A rare few musicians become stars and it’s an extraordinary challenge to rise to the level of any professional sports league. But, even those who have the talent must work their tails off and endure many setbacks.
The same is true in our business lives. To succeed, you’ll have to work your tail off and endure many setbacks. Don’t allow yourself to become discouraged or take an easy way out. That’s the path to failure.
Critical to success is persistence.
Of course, all that striving sometimes leads us down an unintended path. It’s like the song says…
You can’t always get what you want
But if you try sometimes you just might find
You get what you need
